Mike gave me a lifetime opportunity! Straight from fellowship, I became a transplant surgeon, Assistant Professor of Surgery and a Director of the Pancreatic Islet Transplantation Program with a sufficient budget to run clinical islet studies!
He gave me the freedom of decisions in exchange for full responsibility and accountability. He has always been supportive of my new ideas, ready with advice, not only with medical or research related decisions but more importantly, how to navigate through big waves and storms in administration, politics, as well as properly manage the budget and personnel.
